Investigating Diana

Princess Diana’s death in a car crash in 1997 shocked the world and ignited a debate about how and why she died. Was it a car accident? Or was she killed by the British establishment to prevent a possible Muslim stepfather to the heir to the throne? This four-part series takes these questions as its starting point, telling for the first time the story of the two police investigations into her death, one by the French, one by the British, whose detectives have never spoken in the 25 years since the crash.

The series hears how detectives from both sides of the Channel chased every lead in the midst of extraordinary challenges — unreliable witnesses, fallible memories, falsehoods from the press and the proliferation of online chatrooms, where speculation on the ‘real’ cause of Diana’s death became one of the first viral sensations of the early internet. Told as a gripping and forensic police procedural, the series explores how powerful individuals, the press and the internet created and fed theories that called into question the very nature of truth, a progenitor of the world in which we live today.
